Restore the State and
Local Tax Deduction (SALT)

One of the most punitive backdoor tax increases ever imposed on the people of Nassau County was contained in a bill passed in 2017 that put a $10,000 cap on the state and local tax deduction.

It was a divisive stunt to penalize Americans who live in high tax, high cost of living states. It mattered not to them that New York taxpayers already send to Washington far more than we get back in federal aid. It mattered not to them that their ill-conceived tax increase was a gut punch to many middle-class homeowners on Long Island, including police officers, firefighters, teachers, nurses, and small business owners.

The people of Long Island already pay some of the highest property taxes in the nation. It is not our fault that we live in a democratically controlled state, among the highest earners in the country, with one of the highest state and local tax burdens in the nation.

I stand with the bipartisan coalition of lawmakers from New York, including Congressmen Andrew Garbarino, Nick Lalota, and Anthony D’Esposito, who are leading the fight to right this wrong and restore tax justice to the people of Long Island.
